Hanging Lanterns, as seen is some blockbuster films...
The popularity of hanging lanterns is soaring as of late and are appearing in more and more films that hit the big screens.
Paper lanterns are also used heavily in the film industry. The purpose of lanterns in film is not for decoration; instead, these lanterns are used to produce an enormous amount of light. These lanterns have a special name, “chinaballs.” They use bulbs up to six hundred and sixty watts, which is bright enough to simulate daylight in a dark room.
- The Time Traveller’s Wife – when Clare marries Henry the outdoor celebration takes place in her parents back garden. The stage is set for the first dance and the happy couple are surrounded by hanging lanterns that appear to be floating softly in the sky – they are in fact suspended from a metal frame set in a cube around the stage with each lantern suspended individually at varying heights.
- The Karate Kid (2010) – Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan star in the remake of 1980's Karate Kid, outside Dre's (Smith) school you'll notice two large red, oval chinese lanterns, complete with gold tassels. These lanterns are traditionally hung outside houses and temples to ward off evil spirits. Mid way through the film the story moves to the heart of Bejing where Dre and his Mum visit the markets - the streets are littered with nylon hanging lanterns!
- Legally Blonde 2 - Elle calls the Delta Nu's to activate call tree number 255 to gather support for 'Bruiser's Bill' and 'To Save Bruiser's Mom'. In the background you can see purple and pink nylon hanging lanterns, hung all at one height in alternate colours. To recreate this look simply order our 12" nylon lanterns in hot pink and purple and hang them using coloured ribbon to match the hanging lanterns.
- Mamma Mia – At Sophie’s (Amanda Seyfried) hen party in her Mum’s hotel the outdoor terrace is decorated with Hanging Lanterns. Hanging Lanterns also litter the cliff side to create a serene ambience as the wedding party make their way up to the quaint little church at the top. As the sun goes down the lanterns provide enough light for the wedding party to make their way to the ceremony.
- Twilight – Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) takes Bella (Kristen Stewart) as his date to their High School Prom. They pose for their photo surrounded by white Hanging Lanterns and fairy lights. As they approach the gazebo for the slow, romantic dance of the evening again the scene is filled with round, white, paper hanging lanterns.
- When Tracey finally marries Doug in The Hangover, one of the biggest comedies of 2009, the garden is decorated with white Chinese Lanterns. Each lantern is individually lit to give a serene glow and set a romantic scene.
- Twilight – New Moon; following on from the first film in the Twilight saga, hanging lanterns continue to be used to decorate the film set! This time Bella has a red round, even ribbed paper lantern hanging in her bedroom.
- My Sister’s Keeper – starring Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin. White Chinese Lanterns have been used to decorate the hospital ward when Kate and Taylor attend the patient’s summer party.
- Sweet Home Alabama - in the run up to Melanie Carmichael's wedding to Andrew Hennings we see the wedding reception marquee decorated entirely in white - including white traditional chinese hanging lanterns! The paper lanterns are hung from the sashed marquee ceiling using cord kits providing additional romantic lighting to the chandeliers already running through the centre of the marquee.
- Heroes Season 4 Episode 13 – “Upon this Rock”
After Hiro Nakamura vanishes from Samuel’s carnival he reappears in the markets of Tokyo asking random questions referring to different comic books and science fiction.
Over Hiro’s shoulder you can see numerous different shapes and styles of Chinese hanging lantern, including green and white striped round lanterns and white even ribbed cylindrical paper lanterns.
Hiro is eventually arrested after using a butcher’s knife to free a woman’s handbag from a mugger, when we see yet more white paper lanterns hanging in the marketplace. - E4's One Tree Hill has featured our paper hanging lanterns in a number of episodes, mainly surrounding the character of Haley played by Bethany Joy Galeotti. When Nathan and Haley re-marry in their garden by the river you can see ivory hanging lanterns suspended from the trees along the river bank behind them. You'll see this image of the irregular ivory paper lanterns in the opening credits of One Tree Hill too! Several series later our baby pink paper lanterns are featured in the episode featuring Haley's baby shower. The surprise baby shower, organised by Quinn and Brooke, sees Brooke decorating her house with pink hanging lanterns in a variety of sizes from 8" to 20". We also see tissue pompoms in two colours (lime green and yellow) hanging around Brooke's kitchen.
- Steve Martin, Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin star together in ‘It’s Complicated’, currently showing on Sky Movies.
In one scene we see paper lanterns being hung around Lauren and Harley's garden! There is a large selection of 8” white paper lanterns in an even ribbed pattern, plus a selection of 12” irregular ribbed white Chinese lanterns.
It just goes to show how easy hanging lanterns are to assemble and hang – the men are even hanging then on festoon lighting!! - Ivory paper wedding lanterns feature in No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher!.
A guy (Adam) and a girl (Emma) try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it's not long before they learn that they want something more. Towards the end of this rom-com as Emma’s sister prepares to get married, ivory hanging wedding lanterns in the round, irregular style feature at the wedding rehearsal dinner. The hanging lanterns have been suspended randomly around the venue at the same height using clear finishing wire to give the effect of the wedding lanterns floating around the venue. - Channel 4's The Bachelor with Gavin Henson &ndash Gavin picked 25 girls to join him firstly in the South of France and secondly in Italy. Each week sees the 'Rose Ceremony' when he eliminates one girl until finally he is left with the final one to become his girlfriend and maybe even his future wife! Each 'Rose Ceremony' takes place after dark and our white nylon hanging lanterns hang behind Gavin on cord kits to provide a romantic setting. The white nylon hanging lanterns are also hung from the trees around the pool at the French house. Only two or three nylon lanterns have been hung at varying heights from each tree creating a unique decoration in the sun.
- Paper lanterns on Kendra! - Hef's former girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson and her husband Hank Baskett recently moved into their new 'dream' home and to celebrate threw a garden party BBQ for their family, friends and neighbours.
Kendra threw a Luau Hawaiian inspired party and decorated her garden using purple and white paper lanterns. The hanging lanterns were suspended randomly from trees surrounding their pool.

The 'Student Knight Slide' held at the start of the film sees Sam meeting the undercover agent for the first time as he follows her down the slide.

Valentine's Day in Hollyoaks saw Darren's surprise wedding to Nancy take place in a courtyard in the Chester village.
Fairy lights and our paper hanging lanterns in red and white adorned the small outdoor space making for a very intimate wedding ceremony.
Wedding lanterns from 12" to 16" were used in round, oval and kiwi shapes. Our red flower ball lanterns even made a feature appearance in the courtyard!
