Saturday 19th March 2011 saw the lavish society wedding of Dr Victor Frankenstein (played by Andrew Gower) and his childhood sweetheart Elisabeth Lavenza (Eastender’s Lacey Turner) at Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds.
Approximately 12,000 members of the public joined the cast to watch the one of a kind live TV performance of Frankenstein’s Wedding in the grounds of the 12th century abbey. However, the love story of Frankenstein and his bride was ill-fated from the start!
Frankenstein’s monster returns to ask Dr Frankenstein to create a mate, if the doctor did not he would loose everything, and everyone that meant anything to him. The debate between science and morality ensued. Whilst Elisabeth is getting ready for her wedding we see Dr Frankenstein creating a female ‘monster’.
As the wedding ceremony starts to unfold we see Elisabeth and Frankenstein senior walking towards the ruins of the chapel along a path lined with nylon Chinese lanterns illuminating their way. The hanging lanterns used at Frankenstein’s wedding were suspended from festoon lighting in bright blue, lime green, red, mango orange, and violet, and we all supplied by The Hanging Lantern Company.
Meanwhile Frankenstein’s ‘monster’ starts to wreak havoc, eventually killing Elisabeth’s maid of honour, and Frankenstein’s best friend and vicar. The wedding guests continue to sing, dance, and celebrate the nuptials oblivious to the ongoing reign of terror.
However, following the wedding ceremony Frankenstein discovers the body of his best friend and the police are called. Frankenstein's monster manages to corner Elisabeth and kill Frankenstein’s father!
The final scenes of the live performance on BBC3 saw a showdown between Frankenstein, the monster, and the police resulting in both Elisabeth and Frankenstein losing their lives on the day of the wedding.
