Trafalgar Square erupted in celebration when it was announced that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympic Games.
6.6 million tickets went on sale across 26 different sports being competed in between 27 July – 12 August 2012.
The Opening Ceremony consists of a number of traditions and requirements showcasing the best of the host country. There will be a Parade of the Nations, a grand procession of the participating teams in alphabetical order of their country, but of course, the big finale is the entrance of the Olympic flame into the stadium and the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron.
The Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games marks the end of the games, and sees all athletes parade together rather than by country or sport. Three flags are hoisted on flagpoles one at a time – that of the host nation, the Greek flag (the birthplace of the Olympics) and the flag of the country hosting the next Olympic Games. The big finale sees the Olympic flame distinguished.
